The Programme

The Effective Board Member programme has a focus on corporate governance but also covers other skills such as leadership, presentation and networking.

The next programme will take place as follows:

  • Closing date for applications- September 2017
  • Orientation- 20th September 2017
  • Compulsory Classes- 14th October 2017, 11th November 2017, 9th December 2017, 13th January 2018, from 9.00am-1pm (time subject to change)
  • Exam- 10th February 2018
  • Other dates to be advised

  • Governance in the third sector
  • Business strategy
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
  • Networking
  • Presentation Skills

How to Get On The Board

Becoming a student on the programme will involve the following:

  1. Introductory event or referral
  2. Complete application form*
  3. Attend orientation*
  4. Short-listing and selection*
  5. Attend Governance Certificate Course*
  6. Attend other events
  7. Pairing with a mentor and organisation
  8. Attend board meetings
  9. Evaluation of programme*

The Programme Offers:

  • Direct teaching and individual consultation experienced facilitators and individuals with relevant experience.
  • The opportunity for each candidate to be allocated a mentor who will work with them for between three and six sessions, guiding them to recognise and facilitate effective board behaviour.
  • Skills to develop networking, debating and presentation research capabilities.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to observe and be considered for the board membership of medium sized and large third sector organisations.
  • Psychometric testing and strengths profiling.
  • Eligibility to sit the governance practitioner course.
  • Student membership of ACGP.
  • Access to the exclusive on-line portal with governance and leadership tools and resources.
  • Use of the dedicated interactive section of the ACGP website for topical debate and chat with previous graduates.
  • A comprehensive biography and pen portrait for each student.
  • Attendance at events with high profile speakers and practitioners.
  • A certificate of achievement and graduation ceremony.
